Federal 52 Playing Cards - Foiled Edition

I'm almost totally happy with these. The art, with the foil-based parts, is totally awesome. The two issues I have are 1) The card stock is glossy, which makes the shine of the foil jump out less. I couldn't tell that from the product photos. I wish it were less shiny. 2) The cards are all slightly convex- not to the point where they snap in and out if you bend them, but I just noticed it right when I took them out of the box. Might be a function of not being USPCC cards. The box is sick.

Jackson Robinson is an amazing designer and innovator. He is an artist. His Table Players series is unrivaled. However, Federal 52 as well as his other foil decks all feel to me like works in progress. I'm glad I have them, but they are far from perfect. The images in his foil printed decks are often way too dense and therefore unreadably dark. I don't appreciate how they are deceptively brightened when they are photographed for advertising. The cards handle poorly. And they have a certain headache-inducing smell that won't fade. All that said, I covet all my Kings Wild decks as documents of Robinson's work. As a collector, I consider this a flawed yet essential representation of the art form.
